Description of composition. Thomas Hardy, the renowned English Victorian novelist, was born in this beautiful thatched cottage at Higher Bockhampton, near Dorchester, Dorset, England in 1840. Shown here in high summer, in this cottage he wrote many of his earlier novels including 'Far From the Maddening Crowd', ' Under the Greenwood Tree' and 'Desperate Remedies'.
 
- as 'fine' as the 'dots' only style could get before the additional use of the 'tip' of a scalpel blade............the 'dots' to complete the thatched roof took one month, by way of interest!
