THE
TECHNIQUE – PEN AND INK – OR PEN, INK AND SCALPEL BLADE
DRAWINGS
From around 1990 onwards – the pen,
ink and scalpel blade drawings ……working
by naked eye only, of course, the additional use of the `tip` of a scalpel
blade `beyond` and `on top of` the `dots` only technique of the 1980s.
(into a new level of `exhaustion!) finally achieves, surely, a very
maximum tonal range (`depth`) and level of `detail`. The Artist draws on a
high white line paper. `At Carrick-a-Rede with Tess` shows this
extraordinary level of `detail` at its best while, to Richard Kennedy, his
most seminal drawing to date, `Through Craigavad
Woods with Tess` illustrates the progression - 1989 – from `dots` only, so to speak, into the
additional, extensive, use of the scalpel blade …….
Until
around 1989 …… working by naked eye only, of course, these pen and ink
drawings are entirely made-up of `dots` of ink using a needle-point pen.
However painstaking this evolving technique over previous years, one does achieve a
very wide tonal range (`depth`) and `detail`. For example, the
Artist`s four month drawing
of `Thomas Hardy`s Cottage`,
we think, shows this `dots` only technique at its finest ….. about two
weeks to complete the thatched roof !
